Tomato Seed
Tomato seeds are small, flat, and kidney-shaped! Each seed contains everything needed to grow into a tomato plant.
๐ก Fun Fact: One medium tomato contains about 150-200 seeds inside!
Germination
After 5-10 days, the seed cracks open and sends out a tiny root down and a green shoot up through the soil.
๐ก Fun Fact: Tomato seeds need warm soil (65-70ยฐF) to germinate properly!
Seedling Growth
The first leaves (called cotyledons) appear, followed by true tomato leaves that are serrated and fuzzy.
๐ก Fun Fact: Tomato leaves have tiny hairs that release a distinctive smell when touched!
Yellow Flowers
Small yellow flowers appear in clusters. Tomato plants can self-pollinate, meaning each flower can make a tomato by itself!
๐ก Fun Fact: Tomato flowers are perfect flowers - they have both male and female parts!
Green Tomatoes
After pollination, small green tomatoes form. They start tiny and gradually grow bigger while staying green.
๐ก Fun Fact: Green tomatoes contain solanine, which makes them taste sour and protects them from being eaten too early!
Ripe Tomatoes!
The tomatoes turn red (or other colors) as they ripen. They become sweet, juicy, and ready to eat!
๐ก Fun Fact: One healthy tomato plant can produce 10-15 pounds of tomatoes in a season!
